What would you do to stay out of the news headlines… and out of jail?”Such a Good Wife

Melanie Hale has the perfect life. Her husband, Collin, is a loving and supportive partner and she loves their small-town home just outside of New Orleans. She doesn’t mind (too much) that she’s given up her career dreams to care for her two beautiful children. It’s all worth it.

So why, when she joins a writers’ group for fledgling novelists, does she embark on a steamy affair with Luke, a local bestselling author who gives a talk during the group? Why does she go back to Luke again and again, when she knows it’s wrong?

And then Luke is found dead, and Mel knows she was the last person to see him alive. Now, she not only has to keep the affair a secret, but somehow avoid being implicated in Luke’s death. But who would want to kill him? And if Mel finds the truth, will she be next? What follows is a sinister cat-and-mouse game that will leave readers guessing until the very last page.

Book Club 2

Such a Good Wife is a twisty thriller that hooked me from page 1 all the way until the very end. I binge read the entire book while traveling from the West Coast to Hawaii and it was the perfect way to spend a long flight.

On the surface, Melanie Hale is the picture-perfect stay-at-home mom, happily married to her adoring husband Collin. She has a beautiful home, and a life that most women would envy.

However, Melanie’s life is not without challenges. She has an on-spectrum son that needs constant attention, a broody teen daughter and is a full time caretaker to her elderly ailing mother-in-law Claire. Mel’s challenges have her wanting an escape from her real life, in the form of joining a writing group and inadvertently meeting a popular romance writer named Luke Ellison. And that’s when everything in Mel’s life goes spiraling out of control.

This story is about Melanie’s journey into temptation and lust, bad decisions, and what she does to keep her family together. It’s a crazy book that goes in many directions and the twisting plot turns were unexpected. I loved it.

My favorite quotes:

“The drinks are buzzing in my ears, and I feel like I’m in someone else’s life right now. I feel like a character in a book.”

“I want to go home and hold my kids and kiss my husband and pretend none of this ever happened.”

“The fire I’ve created grows with each lie I throw on the flame. I am a liar.”

“As someone who has always though my life as a suburban housewife would never amount to anything else anyone would want to read about, now I have a story, and it’s a story that I can never tell anyone.”

Melanie is a standout unlikeable character full of bad decisions at every turn starting on page 1. She goes to great lengths to cover up her mistakes. Some of the things that she does left me shocked, speechless, and horrified. All of the characters in this book are unlikeable except for Mel’s immediate family.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars 5 Stars

This book is about betrayal, secrets, marriage, family, murder, deception, and blackmail. It kept me engaged from the start until the end with many, many unexpected twists in between. It’s a trainwreck of a book, and I couldn’t stop reading. Well done.

Thanks for stopping by, and be sure to check out my fellow bloggers on this book tour!
