This month we all make New Year’s resolutions that we just won’t keep. And, every year, we keep trying. This yearly tradition reminds us that we can change things with sheer willpower. I ran across this fascinating Popular Science article that explains New Year resolutions, why they’re so hard to follow, and how it comes down to the way our brains work.
The article explains that we usually focus on goals that we haven’t been able to achieve in the past year, and that making them requires no action. The idea satisfies our instant gratification, and in the moment, just thinking about doing something makes us feel good. Also, usually your resolution is about something that you don’t want to do, because tasks are more easily accomplished when we like doing them. OH MY GOSH, THIS IS THE TRUTH.
My 2018 Bookish Goals
My bookish goals are ones that I want to accomplish, and I’d LOVE your help in achieving them!
1. Read as much as I can, whenever and wherever possible.
I’m a full time working mom with 4 kids – need I say more? Reading is a luxury for me.
2. Read one memoir
I’m going to try something new this year and read a memoir. Any suggestions?
3. Read one historical fiction book
I’m very narrow minded when it comes to genres, and historical fiction usually doesn’t interest me. But there are so many good ones out there – I will try one this year.
4. Read 40 books
I read 50 books in 2017 so this is pretty attainable. I’m thinking that I’ll surpass it, but why set the bar too high? 😉
5. Have a guest post on my blog
6. Guest post on someone else’s blog
I’m not sure how I can do this. Any suggestions?
7. Learn about book tagging
If you have any tips or resources please share!
8. Learn more about Bookstagram
Do you have any good suggestions for people to follow?
Happy New Year! I’d love to hear your resolutions and tips for reaching mine. Cheers!
Wow is all I can say. 50 books in one year. You are amazing. I do think I have a historical book “The Alice Network”.

Great post. On historical fiction, I recommend The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah if you haven’t read it yet. I recently read The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill and it was pretty good. The Boy in Stripped pajamas is also great. The memoir that is most memorable for me is Trevor Noah’s Born A Crime. I recently read Gabrielle Union’s, We’re Going to Need More Wine and it was nice too.
All the best with your goals and Happy New Year.
